‘Every minor detail – execute them’: The striker’s journey from gurney to success with Athletic

Thehe first time Gorka Guruzeta featured in England, an young appearing for Athletic Bilbao B against German opponents at the English ground in September 2015, he hit the target. The second time he appeared in the country, against the English side weeks after, he netted. The third time, against Manchester City not long later, well, he did it once more. When he returned to the city to take on Manchester United at Leigh’s ground in 2017, he found the back of the net. A spectacular strike, as well. “Truly,” he remarks, “it’s a top-class goal I’ve netted.” Therefore the team did what they had to do: they substituted him.

“I got well angry,” the Athletic striker says, then chuckling. “I’m sure there’s footage. Our match against United and I was in fine form. They kept me out of the latter period: my contract wasn’t finalized agreement, I was scoring goals, there were lots of rumours, it’s typical. No confirmation on the Magpies’ pursuit, but I remember reading about Manchester United, the typical thing. I’m not certain the validity, but even if they had called, I’d have chosen to stay at the club. I feel lucky to be here.”

La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph

At Lezama, the Basque Country, the early training is about to start; after it, the brief trip to the airport and another flight to Britain, this time to face Newcastle in the UCL on Wednesday. Mentioning that phrase makes Guruzeta smile. It has become a challenging campaign for the club, partly because of the demands of being here. Defeated late on in the weekend clash, they have won only one of their past eight league games and fallen to the Gunners and the German side in Europe. However, consider the broader view, the memorable evenings and upcoming events, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation from him.

In the three years since he had rejoined the team, Gorka has been a Europa League semi-finalist, denied at the last hurdle a final at home by the English giants, and has ridden an historic vessel through the waterway accompanied by a million fans after securing the Spanish cup, the team’s initial silverware in 40 years. Now he is the club’s leading marksman in the European competition, where they are countercultural and making their first appearance in a decade. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he admits.

He considered it challenging enough just to make the first team and that proved true. As the child of the one-time rival player the former professional and a regular attendee at the opposition side, Guruzeta is a product of Antiguoko, the San Sebastián club that produced the Arsenal manager, the former star and the tactician. His move to Athletic came at seventeen but after his first-team bow in that summer, he experienced a torn cruciate, dropped, a drop in category and a recall before he could earn his place, returning at 26 to experience the peak of the club’s history.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta aims to take on Newcastle in the Champions League.

“Entering the youth system thinking you won’t reach the first team but every phase you go through you’re remaining and you can notice the proximity. You arrive and then … departure is necessary.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in half a dozen appearances between his first game and that period. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches at that level and I tear my cruciate.

“A massive setback but In retrospect as a turning point because it forced me to alter the perspective. Healing from a serious ailment is difficult, but it helps. You adopt practices previously lacking. Previously I was casual, but I did the sessions and then go home, like when you’re a kid. At the complex, all resources are available, so take full advantage. Training, prehab. Hit the weights. Should your hips be uneven, work on that. If your ankles are a 10, improve it more. All the minor details: execute them.

“At the top level you’re going to collide with opponents who have crashed into players 200,000 times. Highly robust. Reviewing old images: my physique was slight. So what happens, happens. Current photos and it’s totally different. The setback taught me. Training finishes, but further effort is needed. Peers are prepared, really ready; you have to be too.”

You also have to play. The striker moved upset in the pandemic season, aged 23, moving to a lower level. With Sabadell in 2020-21, he netted three goals in 40 games. With Amorebieta in the following period, the he found his form. “It’s a common path: temporary moves, ended deals. With a turnaround, effort, faith, and when eventually they need someone where you play, recall is possible. Preparation is key. When they decided to call again, it was a dream come true. Lifting the cup, compete continentally, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”

No wonder he says appreciate the experience. Particularly after the prior campaign which, on occasions, was about endurance. From top scorer with 16 in 2023-24, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
